Enclothed Cognition and the art of getting dressed

I was interested to read the theory behind 'enclothed cognition' and the idea that clothing influences our feelings and behaviour through their symbolic meaning. In tests children who wore superhero costumes performed better than normally dressed peers on puzzles, seemingly empowered by the outfits they were wearing and the association with superhuman beings.

The effect of clothes on your mood and self-esteem can not be underestimated. An important meeting at work? You dress in your sartorial armour. A hot date? You wear something that makes you feel attractive. Running a half-marathon? I guarantee you feel more prepared when you have 'all' the right gear (running vest included). So, if we feel good in clothes that empower us, why don't we wear them all the time?

Galaxy skirt, £89

The thing is we should, we really, really should. Especially at a time of year when grey skies, colder temperatures and the looming prospect of a long winter can weigh heavily on our shoulders. If life feels better in a sparkly top, then wear it. Especially when you're sat at home working on your tax return or hoovering the living room. This is the ultimate example of dressing to please yourself, and only yourself. I love an elongated cuff, and catching a glimpse of mine (even better when sparkly) when working at my desk just makes me smile inside.

Don't save your best for 'best'. Use the textures, prints, colours and shapes that you love all the time. Wearing clothes you associate with feeling good will help you feel better even on days when fortune isn't blowing in your direction. As I often say to my children, 'fake it 'til you make it', and if wearing a stunning outfit helps you to put on that smile and eventually feel that smile, then that's an excellent way of dressing.
