Hello April aka What to wear to the pub

What's that? You're going out, you say? And not for an extra-long wander around the supermarket just to escape the house? Yes, that's right folks, socialising is back on. So, masks and hand gel to the ready, here's what you need to be wearing now that we're all allowed out (with the emphasis on the 'out') again....

One minute you're in an elasticated waist and comfy slippers trying not to eat the entire contents of your fridge, and the next you're in a pub garden with five friends trying to remember how to make conversation. Such is life on the corona-coaster as we find ourselves whizzing out of Lockdown and into the pub garden faster than you can say 'next slide, please'. But what on earth do we wear? It's been a long time since we've socialised, and a longer time still since we've socialised outside, in the British Springtime, which as we all know, is changeable at best.

My first thoughts are that it's time to dress up. Not 'up up' as in 'night out at a swanky cocktail bar', but 'up' in that it's time to bid farewell to that loungewear and say hello to clothes that put a spring in your step. It's the first time you've been allowed out for months, and even if it's only to your friend's garden or the local pub, it's OUT! Seeing people! Which really is something to celebrate. So come on! Get out of those trackies and make yourself feel good by wearing something that looks good. If all else fails, at least your outfit is one thing to talk about...

The Bag

It's time to bring back your bag. When you're not really leaving the house, you don't really need a bag, but now, with essentials like hand gel and masks to carry, you must definitely do. Bags should bring your joy. They're the finishing touch to your outfit and should never be an afterthought. My new range from Danish brand Depeche do just that. Beautifully made from leather, they are high-fashion bags without the haute couture price tag. Or go for a cheerful colour pop in the form of a tasselled crossbody with a detachable strap. These straps are a great way to change up your bag, and are a guaranteed talking point (and we're going to need some of those.) Finally, you could plump for the Balearic Boho Bag, which is a DREAM of a summer bag. Soon, it will be sunny again, and this gorgeous tasselled bag is your warm month companion. Ooh it's just so pretty.....

The Dress

'Tis the season of the dress and a socially-distanced meet up in a friend's garden is the perfect opportunity to wear one. Ideally, make it a buffet dress, which not only looks great, but will hide a multitude of Lockdown cake-eating sins (I'm assuming it's not just me). This denim one from Moss Copenhagen is a perfect spring/summer shade, with a waist tie that can easily be cinched in (or left out) as to your taste. Or go for this stunning green dress by Numph. A perfect example of a Buffet Dress, it fits beautifully with a buttoned torso allowing you to button it up to the collar or unbuttoned and layered with necklaces. This beautiful bohemian dress is another stunner with an on-trend patchwork of print in a gorgeous mint shade.

The Knits

Of course, being the UK where a Crowded House lyric isn't just an early 90s throwback, but a way of life, you'll need to layer up, so add a cardigan, a jumper, possibly a tank as well. Hell, by the end of the evening, you might have to hide under a passing sheep, but until that point a toasty knit will suffice. Long-term customers will know how much I love a cardi (damn, I love a cardi) and I can't speak highly of the ones I have in stock at the moment, which go as well over dresses as they do with jeans and cardigans. Or pair a beautiful knit such as the red/pink Avery or pink chevron, which will bring a touch of colour and joy to your evening.

Leggings

While I'd love to say that you'll be able to sit outside in just a dress and bare ankles, if you do it for any length of time at the moment, you'll turn to ice. So wear your dress over leggings like these stunning marbled ones (or add tights). Alternatively, how about these faux leather leggings by Saint Tropez. A gorgeous fit, they look amazing with trainers and a jumper, and are a nearly-year-round wardrobe essential.

Jacket Required

No brainer, really. At least until summer starts (and even then on some days). On a not-completely-freezing day, a shacket is a Spring go-to, whilst this beautiful bomber by Numph is a true work of art (and warm to boot). And how about this gilet/vest? Feminine, statement and amazing over jeans or leggings (and a dress), it is just gorgeous for in-between days.

The Extras

Scarf, blanket, you name it, you might need it. I've been wearing a scarf for the last few days as it's been on the chilly side and a lovely, warm scarf is the perfect way to raise your temperature. Plus they look great with a shacket or a jacket. I have lots online from lightweight summery styles to weightier ones, which are so soft, they feel like you're wearing a hug. And until we can actually do that, a lovely scarf is almost the next best thing.....
